October 31, 2011
For several years OAA has proudly supported and participated in the Women's 5K Classic, this year was no different. Held annually, the Women's 5K Classic is a run/walk race event and health expo, to increase education and awareness, promote fitness and well-being, and support women with breast and other female cancers as well as survivors. The 19th Annual Women's 5K Classic, held on October 15th, had more than 5,400 registered to participate and 8 of those registered were employees of OAA or part of OAA organized teams. Plus, one of OAA's outstanding physicians pitched in to volunteer! For Jeanne Connelly, VP Clinical Operations, this was the first year she had the availability to complete the run. She also noted the sense of camaraderie and support. Danielle Leary, Physical Therapist, shared that while she first started competing in 2004 with coworkers, she also participates for family members that survived breast cancer. No matter the inspiration, participating in the Women's 5K Classic is always a rewarding and touching event. On race day women of all ages and fitness levels come together to challenge themselves and support the cause. "Watching all those women, together supporting a cause is really cool and the Survivors Parade is very emotional," Dr. Dubov added. If you are interested in participating in next year's event, Danielle recommends registering early and findinga friend or group to train with. First Strides is a beginner walking and running workshop for women that includes weekly training sessions with the end goal of participating in the Women's 5K Classic and is a great way to get started or to improve your performance. If you are not interested in running or walking, that's not a problem, there is a way for everyone to participate. Volunteer your time or stand on the sidelines to cheer. No matter how you participate, Dr. Dubov (volunteer) says, "Enjoy, have fun and remember the purpose of why all are there." |
