ANNA
Anna Hamershock knows a thing or two about joint replacement therapy. Over the past several years, she had knee replacement surgery performed on both of her knees by Dr. Paul Pollice, OAA Joint Replacement Specialist. In 2003, Anna had her left knee replaced using the traditional knee replacement surgical technique, and on October 3, 2006, Anna had her right knee replaced, this time with the help of Computer-Assisted (CI) surgery system. (CI surgery is a minimally-invasive, computer-assisted technology developed by DePuy (a Johnson & Johnson company) which provides the surgeon with a 3-dimensional view of the knee joint and precise data to help them more accurately align implants during surgery). According to Anna, the benefits of CI surgery were very noticable. Her recovery time was a lot shorter, with an estimated 50% less pain. With her first operation, Anna was physically sick from the pain medication; however, with CI surgery, she was taking Tylenol only by the second week. Anna also noticed a difference during her physical therapy sessions. Her flexibility was a lot greater after CI surgery, as well as her range of motion.
Thanks to Dr. Pollice, Anna is now a very active 71 year old who is looking forward to gardening and going to the beach this summer with her great grandson. Where Anna used to have problems sleeping, she is even sleeping better, too. Anna was recommended to Dr. Pollice by her grandson, Jim, who describes Dr. Pollice as an "all around great guy, extremely meticulous, and a physician who really cares about his patients."
