mcconnellA native of Pennsylvania, Dr. McConnell returned to his home state in 2003 to continue his practice of spinal surgery with the Pennsylvania Spine and Scoliosis Institute at OAA.
He brings with him an unparalleled level of expertise and training in the discipline of spinal surgery, having completed two spine surgery fellowships and being Board Certified in both spinal surgery and orthopaedic surgery.  Dr. McConnell had the unique opportunity to complete his second fellowship at the University of Nottingham in England where he worked with world-renowned spine surgeon John  K. Webb.  He has received international recognition for his work in the field of spinal surgery through numerous publications and presentations at scientific meetings.

Before joining OAA, Dr. McConnell spent 10 years in Virginia where he served as co-director of the Spine Surgery Service in one of the Navy’s largest teaching hospitals.  He also held faculty positions at two medical schools and established the Highlands Spine Institute, a center dedicated to treating patients with a variety of spinal conditions.

Dr. McConnell's patients benefit not only from his 15 years experience and skills as a spinal surgeon, but also from his dedication and compassionate care. He has many clinical interests within the discipline of spinal surgery, but his greatest interest focuses on the treatment of pediatric spinal deformity (e.g., scoliosis) and performing minimally invasive and motion-preservation (non-fusion) spine surgical techniques.

Dr. McConnell is actively involved in medical education and clinical research and has presented at scientific meetings and seminars around the globe. To see a list of presentations and review Dr. McConnell's education, training, and academic achievements, please refer to his Curriculum Vitae.

Dr. McConnell has been a lead investigator for the Prestige-LP 2-Level Cervical Disc Replacementand the Secure-C cervical artifical disc replacement IDE clinical trials. He and 36 other centers around the country have been selected to participate in "CARES" - a new program to document the clinical outcomes and further education and research in the use of lumbar artificial disc replacement. Current research projects include a comparison of graft materials for lumbar spinal fusion using B-Tricalcium Phosphate or Bone Morphogenic Protein and on-fusion dynamic stabilization in the lumbar spine using the Stabilmax System and Wallis IPD device.

On a personal note, Dr. McConnell dedicates his time and talent to helping those who are less fortunate.  Along with fellow spinal surgeon and former Nottingham colleague, Dr. Ujjwal Debnath, he co-founded "Operation Straight Spine", a charitable mission project which provides spine surgery services for the poor and underserved in Kolkata, India.
