RICHARD

The “pride and joy” of 91 year-old Richard Kleintop’s life is his grandson, Matthew McBride, a Lehigh University student and baseball player who was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2006.   When severe knee pain threatened Richard’s ability to attend his grandson’s games, he sought the help of Dr. Paul Pollice, Total Joint Replacement Surgeon at OAA Orthopaedic Specialists.

Richard and his wife were originally referred to Dr. Pollice in 2003, when Mrs. Kleintop was experiencing severe knee pain (her chronic knee problems had become progressively worse). During that time, the Kleintops met with Dr. Pollice on several occasions to discuss possible surgery for Mrs. Kleintop.   The Kleintops were extremely impressed with Dr. Pollice’s sensitive, caring nature and the time he took to listen to their concerns.  After weighing their options and taking into account Mrs. Kleintop’s frail health, they decided against the surgery.  In October 2004, Mrs. Kleintop passed away.

In 2006, Richard also began experiencing knee pain.   His daughter, Linda McBride, stated that he would frequently tell her, “I should call Dr. Pollice,” but kept putting it off.  However, when Matt was drafted by the Cleveland Indians’ Minor League team later that year, Richard could wait no longer.   There was nothing that would stop him from watching Matt play for the Cleveland Indians!   It was time to make that call to Dr. Pollice.

In April 2007, Dr. Pollice performed knee replacement surgery on Richard’s right knee.   Richard was soon on his way to recovery – pain free and attending regular physical therapy sessions at OAA.  On Memorial Day, Richard was one of the biggest fans sitting in the New Jersey Blue Claws’ stadium in Lakewood , New Jersey , cheering for Matt and the Lake County Captains (the Cleveland ’s Indians Single A team for which Matt is a catcher).  And guess who was sitting in the seats next to Richard?  Dr. Pollice and family! (According to Richard’s daughter, Linda, Richard was beaming with pride as he sat with both his surgeon and family watching his grandson play.)

Richard Kleintop and his family cannot begin to express their gratitude to Dr. Pollice for having performed his knee replacement surgery and allowing Richard to maintain his quality of life.  According to Linda, "Dr. Pollice is an amazing man."
