Recently, The Hand Surgeons of OAA Orthopaedic Specialists spent 4 days in Las Vegas attending the Annual Meeting & Exposition hosted by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and they've returned with added knowledge and insight. Each year thousands of hand surgeons and allied health professionals attend these meetings which include instructional courses, lectures, labs, research presentations, guest speakers, and more. There is also opportunity to discuss atypical cases, share technique and advice, and learn more about emerging technology and tools. This year, Dr. Talsania noted, that the literature and presentations were very much research and evidence based. In healthcare this can be invaluable, whether it supports or disputes current care and technique. There is also opportunity to reconnect with the surgeons one trained with and under, and the team camaraderie gained when attending these events The ASSH's mission is "is to advance the science and practice of hand surgery through education, research and advocacy on behalf of patients and practitioners," and the annual meetings provide the platform for live out that mission. These events and this continuing education is critical because healthcare is a dynamic field. While continuing education is required in the State of Pennsylvania to maintain certification, Dr. Battista added, "Failure to stay current is a disservice to your patients." |
